Guide for external examiners
Sign in with the account your institution gave you, read the CA and exam papers sent to you with their answers, and approve them or send them back with comments.
Who this guide is for
You are an external examiner. Your institution has given you an account of your own and named you for one or more departments. After a department's head of department approves a paper, it comes to you, and it can be used once you approve it.
Your account does nothing else: you see the papers of the departments you are named for, and no student records, marks or fees.
Before you start
Open your institution's portal and sign in with the email address and password your institution gave you. Select Sign In.
If your institution sent you a link to set your password, open it, enter a New Password and Confirm Password, then select Set Password.
To sign out, open the menu with your initials at the top right and select Sign out.
Approve or send back a paper
Open Paper approvals. It lists the papers waiting for you, with their course and department. Select Show every submitted paper to also see the ones you have already dealt with.
Select a paper to open it. You see every question with its marks, the options with the correct one marked, and the model answers, and the history of the paper's approval: who submitted it, who approved it or sent it back, which version, when, and their comments.
To read it as it will be printed, open the question paper or the marking scheme as a PDF. Until the paper is approved, both carry a DRAFT stamp.
Under Your decision, write a Comment if you want to, then select Approve. To ask for changes, write what needs changing in Comment and select Send back: the paper goes back to its lecturer, who sees your comment.
If the lecturer changes the paper while you have it open, you are told it has changed: select Reload and read it again before deciding. A paper you sent back comes to you again after the lecturer resubmits it and the head of department approves it.
Tips and common questions
A paper I expected is not listed. It may still be with the head of department, or you may not be named for its department. Ask the institution's administrator or the head of department.
I cannot see the Approve button. The paper is not waiting for you at the moment: it is with the head of department, or already approved or sent back.
